Thailand’s food retail sector is a fast growing sector in the economy. Total retail sales in the country are estimated at US$88.2 billion or 22 per cent of the total GDP. The retail sector in Thailand is highly competitive with the presence of major retailers like Tesco supermarket chain, Siam Makro, Big C supermarkets, Central Food Group, Foodland supermarket, and Max Valu supermarkets.

Major supermarket chains in Thailand are exploring a range of merchandizing techniques to attract the consumer dollar as they face intense competition. Besides the traditional marketing discounts and promotional events, food retailers are also offering e-coupons and cash-back through loyalty cards issued.

Some retail chains experiment with different store formats, layout enhancements, and improved product assortments and in some cases downsizing store sizes in locations closer to residential neighborhoods. Some retailers have launched their own mobile apps to promote their store products and alerting consumers to special product promotions.

In addition, most retailers have expanded their range of private label products, special price promotions, discounts, and cash-back programs. For more information, Read the USDA Bangkok Office report on Retail Foods: Retail Foods_Bangkok_Thailand_12-28-2017
