Thailand Updates list of Foreign Halal Certified Bodies for 2025-2028 (09/08/2025)
On August 8, 2025, the Central Islamic Council of Thailand (CICOT) announced its updated list of Foreign Halal Certified Bodies (FHCB). The list went into effect on July 16, 2025, through July 15, 2028. At present, CICOT recognized only one U.S.-based FHCB. Certificates from non-listed FHCBs cannot be used for materials that will be marketed as halal in Thailand. Interested FHCBs can still submit registration requests by September 22, 2025 (Thailand time).

Regulation on Animals Developed Using Genome Editing Technology (12/19/2024)

Update on Thai Food and Drug Administration Requirement for Export Certificates (01/24/2024)
The Thai Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) recently clarified its requirements for copies of export certificates accompanying U.S.-origin imported foods, including fresh fruit and vegetables shipments, into Thailand. To be accepted by TFDA, the copies of export certificates have to (i) be certified by the issuing agencies or (ii) carry the original seal of a U.S. Notary Public, Chamber of Commerce, Commissioner of Oaths, or a Justice of Peace. FAS Bangkok organized the American Food Fun Fest and the Great American Burger Battle to raise awareness of U.S. beef, U.S. potatoes, California cheese, Washington apples, California raisins, U.S. craft beer, U.S seafood, fruits, fruit juices, snacks, and other U.S. products from December 1 to 3, 2017. he event generated sizable onsite sales and huge media exposure greatly increasing awareness of U.S. origin food products.

2017|Retail Foods|Bangkok|Thailand|1/3/2018
In 2016, Thailand had total retail sales of U.S. $88.2 billion, representing approximately 22 per cent of total GDP. Of the US$88.2 billion in retail sales, US$83.5 billion came from store-based retailing with the remaining US$4.7 billion coming from non-store retailing (direct sales, home shopping, and internet retailing). Total food retail sales reached US$52.1 billion comprising 59 per cent of all retail sales. Overall, the retail sector grew by four per cent in 2016.

Thailand has enacted several new regulations that restrict imports of feed and feed ingredients containing certain animal proteins. Thailand failed to notify the WTO for comments from its trading partners on these regulations. USDA has requested Thailand to adopt the systematic approach to plant approvals. However, Thailand has not responded to the request. Therefore, it requires each exporter’s plant be inspected.

The Thai broiler industry in 2017 continued to enjoy favorable export growth and profitable export prices. Thailand’s chicken meat production and exports are forecast to further grow in 2018. Due to findings of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) cases in neighboring countries, Thailand is escalating its disease and surveillance practices on HPAI as the top priority.

Success Story of Borlaug Fellowship Program in Thailand|Export Accomplishments – Other Sanitary/Phytosanitary/Food Safety|Bangkok|Thailand|5/25/2017
A 2016 Borlaug Fellowship Program Alumni has developed a dietary risk assessment spreadsheet that is now used in both the pesticide registration process and the establishment of pesticide maximum residue levels (MRLs). The use of this new tool has helped the Thai government defend their pesticide MRLs from challenges and reduced the processing time for pesticide registration from three to four months to just one month.

Additional Certificate and Labeling Requirements for Some Fruits|WTO Notifications Sanitary/Phytosanitary/Food Safety|Bangkok|Thailand|11/29/2016
On November 8, 2016, Thailand informed the World Trade Organization about a draft regulation on good practice certification and labeling requirements for packing houses of fruits and vegetables. The Thai FDA is currently seeking comments on this notification (SPS/N/THA/239 also notified as G/TBT/N/THA/490) from the World Trade Organization (WTO) member countries. The comment period for trading partners will be 40 days from November 8, 2016, the WTO circulation date.

TH5142 The Chile-Thailand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) entered into force on November 5th, 2015. In 2014, Chile’s agricultural exports to Thailand totaled US$131 million. As a major exporter of many agricultural products, this new agreement will make many Chilean agricultural products more competitive and create new challenge for U.S. exporters particularly for wine, tree fruit, grapes, nuts and seafood. TH5105. Unlike in 2014, the Thai broiler industry in 2015 has encountered much lower profitability due to a sharp decline in broiler prices. Reduced broiler production in 2016 is possible if the Thai government continues its ban on importation of U.S. chicken genetics. Without being officially notified, Thailand banned imports of U.S. live poultry and uncooked poultry products in late December 2014 when the first detection of High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in the U.S. poultry flock was officially reported. On 29 December , 2014, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) issued a Notification in the Royal Gazette providing further preferential duty reduction schedules under Section 12 of the Customs Tariff Decree B.E. 2530 (“Section 12”) for imported seafood products.
