On May 16, Brazil confirmed the first case of Bird Flu (H5N1) on a commercial farm in Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul. Though authorities have culled over 17,000 birds, concerns over how much the virus can be contained have already been raised.
As the world’s largest producer of poultry, Brazil exported around USD 10 billion worth of chicken meat alone to over 150 countries in 2024, accounting for roughly 35% of the global poultry trade.
Several countries have already implemented import suspensions on poultry from Brazil, including Mexico, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, The United Arab Emirates, South Korea, The Philippines, Japan, The European Union and China, Brazil’s largest trade partner.
Though Brazil continues to contain the spread of H5N1 and reassure trade partners on the safety of poultry from unaffected regions, importers have begun to look for alternate sources of poultry.
